CEC 02 Scholarly Publishing and Open Access The course will present a general overview of evolution and current situation of scholarly communication system and scholarly publishing but will focus on Open Access (OA) to promote research visibility, usage and impact. Open Access origins, objectives, definitions, routes (“Green” and “Gold”) and types (“gratis” and “libre”) will be presented and discussed. The most relevant and recent developments of Open Access will be also analyzed. The teacher is Eloy Rodrigues, a portuguese librarian well known for spreading the word about open repositories. |
BiographyEloy Rodrigues is the director of the University of Minho Documentation Services. In recent years he has devoted much of his work to the development of digital libraries, education and training of librarians and library users and the study of the scholarly communication system. In 2003, Eloy Rodrigues lead the project to create RepositoriUM - the institutional repository of Minho University and he has directed the project ever since. At the end of 2004 he drafted the formal policy of Minho University on open access to its scientific output. His other main focus is on promoting and advocating Open Access and institutional repositories in Portugal, leading and coordinating the technical team that, since 2008, has been developing the RCAAP (Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal = Portugal Open Access Science Repository) project. At European level he was a member of the EUA (European University Association) Working Group on Open Access and he leads the participation of Minho University in several EU (FP7) funded projects related with Open Access and repositories. |
