Tours trough Krakow There are three tours offered to conference attendees. You may choose and enroll in one of them. They are offered in English and given by travel guides from the ORBIS travel agency:
  • A Walking Tour of Krakow - Royale Route
  • Traces of Jewish Culture
  • A Tour of Nowa Huta
They all start at 17:30 on Thursday, September 13th and take approximately 3 hours. The Orbis buses will await you on the parking lot in front of the Conference Center to take you for your selected tour.

Do not forget to take an umbrella and a warm jacket with you on the tour, as it might be chilly or raining.

ORBIS buses will be provided for the participants of the Walking Tour of Krakow - Royal Route. A red bus will be provided for the Tour of the Nowa Huta. Finally, tour guides will be waiting for participants of the Traces of Jewish Culture tour. Buses and tour guides will meet participants in the parking lot of the Conference and Training Centre.

A Walking tour of Kraków - Royal Route

Buses will take participants to the Wawel Royal Hill. The rest of the tour will continue on foot. Participants will first have the opportunity to discover the nooks and crannies of the ancient seat of Polish kings, including the Royal Castle's courtyard and Cathedral, as well as, the Hill's fortifications. From this point participants will leave the Hill and head toward the city centre. They will walk down the Royal Road, Grodzka and Kanonicza streets, stopping at numerous churches along the way. Included will be the churches of St. Andrew, Sts. Peter and Paul, and the Archbishop's Palace, once the residence and seat of the late John Paul II. When the group reaches the Grand Market, at approximately 19:30, participants will be invited to Wierzynek restaurant for a light treat. Following this short stop, participants will explore some of Krakow's other ancient treasures

II - The Traces of Jewish Culture

Upon meeting the tour guides at the CTC, you will head to Kazimierz, Krakow's Jewish Quarter, on foot. The first stop of the tour will be the Synagogue, where participants will have a chance to see the temple, the Torah and lithurgical robes. You will then head to Museum Galicia, a vibrant centre celebrating Jewish culture. Participants will then enjoy a short break, accompanied by a light snack. Walks throughout Kazimierz's squares and streets will ensue, en route to the Temple and Kupa synagogues.

III - Nowa Huta Tour

A bus will take participants from the CTC to Nowa Huta. Seats are provided for 28 people, while the rest of participants have to stand for the time of the short ride to Nowa Huta. This serves as a vivid illustration of the inconveniences of Communist era public transport.

This tour gives you a unique chance to see the town built by Communists after the Second World War. The choice of location in the outskirts of Krakow to erect steelworks was ideologically motivated and two-folded: to build a model Communist city and to change the social strata of Krakow. In the emergence of a "new class", the working class in Nowa Huta, the Communist establishment was hoping to diminish the role and influence of the Krakow inteligensia and bourgeois residents.

The tour starts at Central Square, in the very heart of the Nowa Huta borough, near which an enormous statue of Lenin used to stand for years. Afterwards, the tour continues to the steelworks, now owned by the Mittal Steel Company. Following, you will continue on to the Nowa Huta Cross, which symbolizes bloody fights for the establishment of a church in the town. Later, you will visit the "Lord's Ark Church''. The final stop of our tour is the monument commemorating the site of Bogdan Włosik's death, dedicated to him and all victims of Martial Law, imposed in Poland in 1981. Your journey into Poland's Communist past ends in a typical communist era bar, named "Restauracja Stylowa" (eng. "Stylish/Classy/Chic Restaurant"). It stands as a remnant of Communist times, where with a necessary shot of vodka in hand, you will find out more about the absurdities of life under Communist rule.

Participants will also have the opportunity to visit a typical, Communist-era apartment. The group will divide into two. While one is visiting the apartment, another will enjoy a ride in a Trabant, the Communist version of a Mercedes-Benz.
