We are working with Vision Aid Overseas to support their work in developing countries. 1.1 billion People worldwide have near vision impairment just because they do not have a pair of glasses.
What do conference delegates need to do?
Bring any second hand glasses you have to the conference.
You will then be able to purchase for £3.00 a recycling pack which is returned to Vision Aid Overseas in Crawley England.
Second hand glasses have not been sent overseas since 2011 when the World Health Organization and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness recommended that this was not the best way to establish sustainable eye care in developing countries.
So what happens to the glasses which you send?
The glasses are recycled for their precious metal content such as gold frames. Any retro or vintage glasses are sold via Vision Aid Overseas EBay shop or to specialist buyers.
The income generated through this recycling process supports eye care programmes in partner countries.
If you don’t want to bring old specs with you or you don’t wear glasses, simply pay for a recycling pack or put a donation into the collecting tin.
If our 300 delegates each donate £3.00 we would together raise £900 which would help 200 people overseas, providing them with an eye test and a pair of glasses.
What better way to show the impact we as health librarians and information specialists can make.
