Thursday 4 June 2009: Tours of Historic Libraries of Dublin

16.30-18.00

In the true spirit of cooperation and collaboration, our Dublin colleagues have offered to provide unique tours of the city’s historic libraries to EAHIL delegates. These small tours are free of charge. Spaces are limited so early booking is advised! Libraries include:

  • Marsh's Library. Founded in 1701, Marsh's Library was the first public library in Ireland. The library contains over 25,000 books relating to medicine, law, science, travel, navigation, mathematics, music, surveying and classical literature. It is one of the very few 18th century buildings left in Dublin that is still being used for its original purpose. FULL
  • National Library of Ireland. The mission of the National Library of Ireland is to collect, preserve and make available books, manuscripts and illustrative material of Irish interest. FULL

  • Royal Irish Academy. The Royal Irish Academy library houses a unique manuscript, pamphlet and early printed book collection. The manuscript collection includes the largest corpus of Irish language manuscripts in a single repository, the oldest surviving Irish manuscript, the Cathach, or Psalter of St. Columba, and other important early texts.   • Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland has had a library for almost 300 years, and also houses a substantial archive. FULL

  • Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) includes Schools of Medicine, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy and Nursing. For over two hundred years, the College has played a role in Irish surgical and medical education. The Library holds a modern print and electronic collection to support medical education and a collection of rare books, manuscripts and archives. FULL

  • Trinity College Library. The Long Room of Trinity College Library is nearly 65 metres in length, and houses around 200,000 of the library's oldest books. The old Library also houses the famous illuminated manuscript, the Book of Kells.
    After this tour, there is an optional tour of the current exhibition in TCD's new Science Gallery entitled INFECTIOUS: STAY AWAY, exploring mechanisms of contagion and methods of containment, see www.sciencegallery.ie  FULL


Additional tour options

In addition, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in the following events on Thursday evening. Note: these events involve an additional charge.

  • The Merry Ploughboys Pub. Delegates will enjoy a night of Irish Music, Song, and Dance at The Merry Ploughboys Pub. The night starts with a three course dinner and drinks, the entertainment commences with Ireland's leading traditional Irish music group The Merry Ploughboys and All-Ireland and World champion Irish Dancers from Dublin and beyond perform a specially commissioned show. After the dancing, the Irish music kicks off again and the musicians really up the tempo for the final part of the evening. Both musicians and dancers involve the entire audience in this electric performance. Cost: €69 per person Spaces Available

  • Dublin Literary Pub Crawl. Dublin Literary Pub Crawl is a pub tour with two actors who introduce Dublin writers such as Joyce, Beckett, Behan, Mary Lavin, and Oscar Wilde and perform scenes from their works. The tour lasts approximately 2 1/4 hours. Cost: €22 per person FULL

If you decide not to avail of these excursions you have a free evening in Dublin to go shopping (shops stay open until 8pm on Thursday nights), join your colleagues for dinner or visit the theatre. The LOC will provide lists of local restaurants and popular pubs where you are likely to bump into your EAHIL colleagues!

 

Friday 5 June 2009: Gala Dinner at the Mansion House, Dawson Street, Dublin

This evening will commence with a drinks reception, followed by a sumptuous 5 course dinner. Irish dancers and musicians will provide entertainment, and following the meal, EAHIL delegates are invited to dance the night away to the music of a live band.

Saturday 6 June 2009: Optional All-day tours in the greater Dublin Area and surrounding counties:

1) Wicklow Mountains, Valleys and Lakes (Cost: €30)

2) The Valley of The Kings Tour (Cost: €34)

 

Wicklow Mountains, Valleys and Lakes (€30)

Departs: 09.45 from Stop 1, 14 Upper O’Connell St (outside Dublin Tourism Office)
Please be at the departure point 20 minutess before departure time.

Arrives back in Dublin: 17.00

Departing daily this tour will take the scenic route out of Dublin through the Wicklow Gap and the Blessington Lakes, including a photo stop en route. The tour continues to the pretty village of Avoca, with time to enjoy the Avoca Handweavers and it’s craft shop, reputed to be the oldest weaving mill in Ireland. Then on to the highlight of the tour, Glendalough "glen of the two lakes" a truly spellbinding place, home to the impressive 10th century Round Tower. (Lunch not included)

The Valley of The Kings Tour (€34)

This magnificent UNESCO World heritage site is dated 3,200 BC and is one of the oldest and largest Neolithic burial chambers in Europe predating the Egyptian pyramids! As part of your experience you will be taken on a guided tour of the actual tombs of Newgrange. Your tour will then pass the Boyne Valley, site of the famous Battle of the Boyne, before visiting Monasterboice, home to some of the best examples of high crosses in Ireland. (Lunch not included)
