The continuing education courses will be held on Thursday morning. The PubMed course will take place at The Library of Medicine and Health Sciences, The National Hospital. All the other courses take place at the Radisson SAS Park Hotel.

Searching the evidence: training the trainer

Instructors: Lena Nordheim & Irene N. Wiik, Directorate for Health and Social Affairs (Norway)

Lena Nordheim and Irene N. Wiik are research librarians at the Norwegian Directorate for Health and Social Welfare. They have been working with the aspects of Evidence Based Practice and the involvement of librarians within the Evidence Based Practice area since the last year of their library and information science studies. They started working whithin a multidisciplinary team at the National Institute of Public Health in 1998 and have been engaged in promoting and implementing evidence-based health care for different targetgroups since then. In the beginning of 2002 the Institute was reorganized and the department moved to the Norwegian Directorate for Health and Social Welfare. The main objective is now to implement Evidence Based Practice within the Directorate.

This workshop will focus primarily on the development and enhancement of the librarian's skills and planning involved in organising a workshop in finding good quality information. One important feature is to make the training highly interactive, and use groups work, scenarios and demonstrations to improve their teaching skills. The content and structure of the workshop is based on principles from the CASPfew training the trainer workshops.

Instructor: Jarmila Potomkova, Palacky University Olomouc, Medical Library Information Service (Czech Republic)

Jarmila Potomkova (born 1948, Czech Republic) graduated from Palacky University in Olomouc, majoring in modern philology, and Charles University in Prague where she studied information science. She has worked at Palacky University Olomouc in

positon of medical library director since 1994. She has long experience in project implementation and management. In 1997 she was appointed an information coordinator of an international project of Learning Resource Centers in CEE countries supported by the American International Health Alliance. She has been a chief investigator of 2

domestic projects (one completed in 2001, another running for the 4th year now). She is interested in biomedical information retrieval and evidence-based medicine.

Objectives: The course is suited for those who want to improve their skills as project managers.
Teaching methods: PowerPoint presentation and
Group activity.
Pre-requisites: high spirits, creative thinking.

1. Introduction to project management 

  • management of change exampled in the best-seller "Who Moved My Cheese" by S. Johnson

  • PM as a science and an art

2. Problem definition

  • Problem solving techniques

  • Brainstorming (project leader-controlled group activity)

  • SWOT  analysis (understanding strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats to focus activities into proper areas)

 3. Project planning

  • Schedule

  • Resources

  • Finance

 4. Role of project manager

  • Communication techniques

  • Communication media

 5. Presentation of projects designed during group activity

 6. Course assessment, feedback

PubMed and other relevant NLM resources . Hands-on course

Instructor: Astrid Müller, Library of Medicine and Health Sciences (Norway). Astrid Müller is the chief PubMed instructor at the library.

The course is designed for searchers who would like a refresher or an update on the newest in PubMed and want to expand their knowledge on PubMed Services, such as MeSH Browser, Clinical Queries, LinkOut and related resources, including TOXNET, the NLM Gateway and OldMedline.

Collaboration versus competition
Venue: Radisson SAS Park Hotel

Instructor: Shane Godbolt, London Library and Information Development Unit (UK)

The complexity of today’s world creates new interdependencies and new opportunities for creative partnerships. The key principle on which collaboration depends is developing the skills to work through complexities and different agenda to find common ground and ‘win win’ solutions.

The workshop will give participants the opportunity to explore these ideas and to relate them to their own experience and situation.

Managing E-journals: a do-it-yourself approach
Venue: Radisson SAS Park Hotel

Instructor: Anne-Gry Skonnord, Library of Medicine and Health Sciences (Norway). Qualified as a librarian in 1988. Has worked at the University of Oslo, Library of Medicine and Health Sciences for two years, managing electronic journals.

Daily management of electronic journals:
Presentation of e-journals to the users. End user needs/demands and how we can meet some of them. Linking from databases to fulltext. Training the end users. Consortium experiences.
