In this section you should find all you need to know to help you when you travel to and arrive at the Workshop. You will also have received this in letter/email form.
Arrival
Information about how to get to the city centre and Workshop venues can be found on our Travel and Finding Your Way Around pages.
The main Workshop venue is Appleton Tower, 11 Crichton Street, postcode EH8 9LE.
The Appleton Tower is about 20mins walk from Waverley Station. Edinburgh is a hilly city. If you plan to walk from the station, please note, especially if you’ve a lot of luggage, that if you leave the station by the Market Street (south) exit you will face quite a steep initial climb to get up to the High Street. You may prefer to walk from the Princes Street (north) exit, where there are escalators, and then turn right and then right again onto North Bridge where the incline is not so steep. The taxi rank at the train station is on Market Street.
Registration
Registration will open Wednesday 10 June at 09:00 in the concourse of the Appleton Tower.
Delegates registered to attend the ICAHIS satellite conference on 9 June will be able to get their Workshop registration pack on arrival at the School of Veterinary Studies.
Delegates registered to attend the ICLC satellite conference on the morning of 10 June will be able to get their Workshop registration pack on arrival in the Appleton Tower.
Luggage on arrival/departure
We can keep some luggage behind the welcome/information desk in the Appleton Tower for those arriving or departing directly to/from Appleton Tower. Please note that although we will make our best efforts, this storage will not be secured and we cannot take responsibility for lost or stolen items.
Your badge
Your Workshop name badge is your ticket for meals and entry into buildings. Please wear it throughout the Workshop and take care not to lose it.
Buildings
Most of the events will be taking place in the Appleton Tower and the Main Library. All venues are on this map.
The Main Library has an entry security desk. When arriving for workshop sessions, please be sure to show your workshop name badge to the staff at the entry desk.
Wifi and computer access
The University of Edinburgh uses eduroam, so if your institution does too, be sure to sign up BEFORE you leave home in order to get access. Wifi access codes will be available for those who don’t have eduroam. There will be some computers available for delegates when computer rooms are not being used for workshop sessions. If you need to print something, please ask at the welcome/information desk in the Appleton Tower.
First-Timers event
If you indicated, as part of registration, that you have not attended an EAHIL event before, you will receive a separate email invitation to RSVP for a welcome event on Wednesday 10 June at 11:30. Of course you are welcome even if you are not a member of EAHIL already! There are nearly 100 of you, so we *really* need to know if you are planning to come in order to ensure we have a big enough space and enough coffee. Please be sure to RSVP by 4 June at the latest (please not this is a revised date from the previous deadline of 29 May).
First plenary start time
Please note that the start time of the first plenary in the Workshop has been changed to 13:15 on Wednesday 10 June. This will be the start of the Workshop proper, but remember that lunch will be available from 12:30.
Workshop sessions
As part of registration, you selected to attend workshop sessions. Many session leaders will contact you with an activity to do in preparation for their sessions. If you don’t remember which sessions you signed up for, don’t worry – your personalised schedule is attached at the end of this text. We will also keep the Workshop schedule on the website.
There is limited space in most sessions, so it is not possible to change your selections unless there are free places or you arrange a direct exchange with another delegate. Registration lists for all sessions will be posted near the welcome/information desk, so you can check availability there.
Please make every effort to arrive for your sessions in good time – we have a full schedule, so keeping to time is important for everyone.
Welcome reception
On Wednesday 10 June from 18:00, there will be a Welcome reception in the Playfair Library, in Old College. There will be a bagpiper (our talented colleague Charles Gray) piping a welcome, and we will have a few short speeches of welcome. There will be drinks, cheese and fruit but not a full meal, so you should make plans for having dinner afterward.
Workshop dinner and ceilidh
The Workshop dinner and ceilidh on Thursday 11 June will be in the grand gallery of the National Museum of Scotland. If you indicated that you are planning to attend, you will be given a dinner ticket – please remember to bring your ticket.
There will be drinks from 18:45, and please arrive by 19:00. There will be a three-course meal ending with coffees. Dancing will start in the gallery from approximately 21:30, and after-dinner drinks may be purchased at a bar. It is not necessary to dress formally for the dinner. The dance will be a ceilidh (pronounced /ˈkeɪli/) which will be a modern take on traditional Scottish country dancing. Dancing at a ceilidh is usually fairly lively. The floor of the grand gallery is solid stone – it is not a sprung floor. You should wear sturdy shoes and we do not recommend stilettos or heels that are not comfortable to jog in.
Tours
Like workshop sessions, the tours on Friday 12 June have limited spaces, so it is not possible to change your choice or sign up for one unless there are free places or you arrange a direct exchange with another delegate. Registration lists for all tours will be posted near the welcome/information desk, so you can check availability there. Detailed itineraries for each tour are being finalised and will be added to the tours page.
Photography
Photographs will be taken throughout the event which may be used for publicity. If you do not want photographs of you to be used please let a member of the Local Organising Committee know.
