Within its long-range funding program the Croatian Ministry of Science and Technology launched a project targeting the development of scientific information system in close co-operation with Croatian academic and scientific libraries. The main goals of the project were to: network libraries and make visible their collections, to control local information resources, organising published material in bibliographic and full-text databases and to provide a solution for stable and efficient access to international information resources. The project will be developed modularly, grouping the libraries according to their discipline orientation. Out of the 29 Croatian libraries in the field of biomedicine, 8 have joined the project for its first phase. The coordination role was assigned to the Central Medical Library at Zagreb School of Medicine.

We started in the second half of 1997 with an agenda including:

• procurement of necessary equipment to access the CARNet (Croatian Academic and Research Network)
  
• training in the necessary skills for working in the network environment (e-mail, ftp, www)
  
• designing a home page for each participant
  
• creating union catalogues to facilitate access to collections and intensify interlibrary loans,
  
• co-operative acquisition of electronic information resources,
  
• organizing workshops with practical exercises in classification and subject cataloguing (National Library of Medicine Classification Scheme and MeSH).

In eighteen months we have realised the majority of the planned activities. However we would like to record three major achievements .

• The training of the librarians was very successful. A librarian from the Central Medical Library, a specialist in indexing attended fortnightly workshops in the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda and then she ran two workshops for librarians from other Croatian medical libraries (the cascade learning method). All librarians participating in the Project were trained to use www resources and encouraged to communicate using e-mail. Representatives also attended a course in HTML.
  
• Access to heavily-used biomedical databases (Medline, Current Contents, Evidence Based Medicine and Core Biomedical Journals) has been provided from a common host site using the OVID search engine. We have also made the first steps in co-operative acquisition of foreign periodicals.
  
• The foundations for a Union Catalogue of Serials (http://smk.mef.hr) has been laid down incorporating library holdings for the last ten years (1985 onwards).

LE SYSTÈME D'INFORMATION SCIENTIFIQUE DE CROATIE

Dans le cadre d'une planification budgétaire à long terme, le Ministère de la Science et de la Technologie de Croatie a lancé un programme visant au développement d'un système d'information scientifique en collaboration étroite avec les bibliothèques universitaires et scientifiques de Croatie. Les buts principaux du projet étaient les suivants:

établir un réseau pour les bibliothèques et rendre visibles leurs collections, contrôler les ressources informationnelles locales, organiser la littérature imprimée en bases de données et offrir une solution stable et efficace pour un accès aux ressources informationnelles internationales. Le projet sera développé modulairement, regroupant les bibliothèques selon leur discipline respective.

Huit bibliothèques ont déjà participé à la première phase du projet parmi les 29 bibliothèques de Croatie, dans le domaine des sciences biomédicales. La bibliothèque centrale de l'école de médecine de Zagreb a été désignée comme coordinatrice.

Le projet qui a débuté en 1997 comprenait les éléments suivants:

• disponibilité de l'équipement nécessaire pour accéder à CARNET (le réseau académique de recherche de Croatie);
  
• formation nécessaire pour travailler dans l'environnement du réseau (courrier électronique, transfert de fichiers, la Toile);
  
• création d'une page de garde sur Internet pour chaque participant;
  
• établissement de catalogues collectifs pour faciliter l'accès aux collections et intensifier le prêt interbibliothécaire;
  
• développement en coopération des collections sous forme électronique;
  
• organisation d'ateliers avec des exercices pratiques dans les systèmes de classification et d'indexation (classification de la NLM et utilisation de MESH).

La majorité des activités prévues a été réalisée pendant ces dix-huit mois.

Trois réalisations importantes doivent être mentionnées:

• La formation des bibliothécaires qui a été un succès avec une spécialiste dans l'indexation, formée pendant un séjour de deux semaines à la NLM à Bethesda. Par un système de cascade, cette spécialiste a ensuite formé d'autres bibliothécaires médicaux/les de Croatie. Tous les bibliothécaires participant au Projet ont appris comment utiliser les ressources de la Toile et le language de HTML, de même que le courrier électronique.
  
• L'utilisation d'OVID comme moteur de recherche a facilité l'accès aux bases de données biomédicales les plus utilisées (Medline, Current Contents, Evidence Based medicine et les journaux biomédicaux principaux). Les premières étapes pour un système de développement de collections coopératif ont également été réalisées, ainsi que l'acquisition coopérative de journaux étrangers.
  
• Un catalogue collectif comprenant les dix dernières années (1985 et suivantes) a été mis sur pied.
