An interlibrary cooperative project in Andalusia, Spain

A group of librarians from Hospital institutions belonging to the Servicio Andaluz de Salud (the public Health Service of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Spain), conscious of the problems created by the management of scientific information and present availability of internet to recover information, have joined together in a project of institutional collaboration to link different professional sectors and bring together all the collections and documentary resources available in each one of the centers. Our main objective is to improve and to expand the quality of the services  through the cooperation of the librarians.
 

Objectives
 

  • to identify and to attend future and present information needs of the health professionals by means of documentation strategies incorporating the new information and communication technologies.

  • to increase the "visibility" of participating libraries and to expand its functions, offering useful tailor-made, value added products to facilitate research and study.

  • to contribute to the increment of the scientific production improving access to the existing collections through the bibliographic information and the interlibrary loan.

  • to create and to manage a union catalogue of periodicals, monographs and audiovisual material to improves the effectiveness of research and teaching.

  • to offer an electronic collection of resources that provides a homogenous and interdisciplinary base to all users.

  • to gather in a documentary database all the scientific production by the participating institutions, facilitating the access trough a query interface capable of retrieving full text.

  • to offer a guide for information retrieval on epidemiology, public health and preventive medicine.

  • to arrange resources so that they facilitate the interactive communication of people working on similar topics, projects or lines of research.


Deliverables

Design, creation, development and maintenance of a web site with the aim of creating a virtual library and a portal to information on health topics directed mainly to health professionals and the general public.

Databases

  • lines of research in each center.
  • design and creation of databases with the scientific production by each partecipating center.
  • design and creation of an union catalogue of periodicals, monographs and audiovisual material.
  • design of a directory of resources for:
Automatic Management of Processes: Elaboration of standard protocols and normalization
  • cooperative cataloguing.
  • Indexing of web resources.
  • management of periodicals (periodicals indexing service) and information resources.
  • management of interlibrary loans.
  • design of data collection for the annual report
  • quality studies and productivity of library services
  • quality studies of collections and services
  • studies of potential and real users
