The German National Library of Medicine is in the process of designing the "Virtual Library in Medicine". It will allow users to retrieve and identify relevant information and get access to full-texts in electronic and conventional form through one main portal. Users will be able to search in literature and factual databases, in catalogues, in a database of digital documents and in a collection of evaluated Internet links.
Following a search they can access full-texts from commercial publishers on a pay-per-view basis. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation for a term of two years. Some basis parts of the "Virtual Library" are active. Basis of the project will be a user survey just finished showing the actual demands of professional academic users in medicine in Germany.
