The
academic libraries in Finland are getting a new integrated library
system. We have been using an older version of the VTLS, and since
the new version was rather expensive, the Ministry of Education
together with the academic libraries decided to allow the change of
the system, if it turned out so due to the competitive bidding. The
work was begun early last year, and was different from the previous
work done when selecting the VTLS; many more librarians participated
in testing different systems. This was of course much more time
consuming, but we wanted to have as wide an experience as possible
of library automation systems.
The
decision on the new system was made in September this year by the
directors of the academic libraries in Finland. Our choice was
Voyager/Endeavour, which is now being implemented also in the
National Library of Scotland. They had had the VTLS earlier, as well,
so we are thankful for their experiences in changing from the VTLS
to Voyager.
Each
academic library has nominated one librarian to act as a contact
person for different functions. This means that every library will
actively participate in implementing the system. The contact persons
are on two levels, either a working partner or a contact partner. By
involving as many persons as possible, we hope to make the
transition period run smoothly.
At the
beginning of 2000, the work will be initiated and the whole year
will be used for implementation and for training personnel of all
participating libraries. We are hoping that from early 2001 the
system will be ready for all users.

DE FINLANDE
Les
bibliothèques académiques de Finlande vont avoir un nouveau système
de gestion intégré. Nous avons utilisé une ancienne version de
VTLS et comme la nouvelle version était très couteuse, le Ministère
de l’Education en collaboration avec les bibliothèques
universitaires a décidé d’autoriser le changement de système,
favorisé par une offre compétitive. Le travail a débuté au début
de l’année passée et était différent de celui accompli lors de
la sélection de VTLS, avec de nombreux bibliothécaires participant
à l’évaluation des divers systèmes. Ceci bien sûr a pris
beaucoup de temps mais nous désirions avoir une expérience aussi
large que possible avec les divers sytèmes intégrés.
La décision
concernant le nouveau système fut faite en septembre dernier par
les directeurs des bibliothèques universitaires de Finlande. Notre
choix s’est porté sur Voyager/Endeavour, qui est aussi le système
choisi par la bibliothèque Nationale d’Ecosse. Eux aussi avaient
travaillé avec VTLS aussi nous apprécions leur expérience pour
passer de VTLS à Voyager.
Chaque
bibliothèque universitaire a désigné un bibliothécaire comme
personne de contact pour les diverses fonctions. Cela signifie que
chaque bibliothèque participera activement dans le développement
du système. Les personnes de contact sont à deux niveaux, ou un
partenaire de travail ou un partenaire de contact. En mettant à
contribution autant de personnes que possible, nous espérons
pouvoir passer d’un système à l’autre sans heurt.
Le travail
débutera au début de l’an 2000, et l’année entière sera
consacrée à l’installation et la formation du personnel des
bibliothèques concernées. Nous espérons que le système sera prêt
pour les lecteurs pour l’an 2001.
