| When Luisa Vercellesi announced that she had to step down
as the chief-editor of our Newsletter because of professional duties and time constraints,
it was not easy to find a successor. Luisa invited several colleagues; there was a call
published in the newsletter, but no candidate came forward. During the meeting in
Amsterdam the EAHIL Executive Board considered many options whilst also taking into
account the balance of countries represented on the Board and Committees at present.
Another important factor in the decision whom to invite was the expanding European
Community. Although geographically there is not a noticeable change in the area
(measured in square metres), there is an important change in the political and social
layout of Europe and now with e-mail and Internet the community of the European medical
librarians seems to be without any boundaries or borders.
| Wanting to expand towards the group of Colleagues in Central
and Eastern European countries, it was self-evident that we would invite Ioana Robu,
former MLA Cunningham fellow, to become the chief editor. Ioana suggested that Sally
Wood-Lamont, her deputy librarian, would take full responsibility and promised that she
would fully support the editorial work. A most excellent proposal! Sally, of Scottish
origin, did her training in librarianship in Edinburgh and was an Assistant Librarian at
Edinburgh University Library before moving to Cluj-Napoca, Romania, in 1993. A sabbatical
leave was transformed into a permanent stay in Romania; Sally is the Library Consultant of
the University Library of Medicine, in charge of automating and reorganising the library
into a Western model for all other Romanian libraries to follow. |

All aspects of Librarianship are covered in this work necessitating training,
initiating self-financing schemes, acquisition policies etc. She also acts as an unpaid
consultant to other Romanian libraries in Cluj and other towns and has assisted in setting
up exchanges with the Library of Congress and British and European libraries. In addition,
she is coordinator of a series of Courses in Librarianship for librarians (the first in
Romania) funded by the British Council.
Ioana Robu and Sally Wood are the two lecturers and the current courses are entitled
Technology and Information in the Modern Library. In 1995 Sally was awarded
"International Librarian of the Year" by the British Library Association, an
honour only given three times in the past. Sally has broad experience, not only in
librarianship and teaching and tutoring, but also as editor and language editor of medical
journals and library journals. Sally still has strong relationships with Scotland; many of
these promote bilateral contacts between Scotland and Romania and support educational and
social welfare in Romania. Sally plays a pivot role in these activities.
It is with great pleasure that the EAHIL Executive Board announces that Sally has
accepted the job of chief editorship of our newsletter. The members of the editoral board
look forward to working with Sally and are happy that she has joined the team.

C'est avec plaisir que je désire vous presenter ici Sally Wood-Lamont
la nouvelle éditrice en chef du Bulletin d'Informations de l'AEIBS.
Lorsque Luisa Vercellesi annonca sa résignation comme éditrice en chef
de notre Bulletin d'Informations, pour des raisons professionelles et des contraintes
d'horaire, il n'a pas été aisé de trouver un successeur. Luisa invita plusieurs
collègues. Un appel pour des candidatures fut inseré dans le Bulletin d'Informations
mais aucun candidat ne se présenta.
| A Amsterdam, le Bureau Exécutif de l'AEIBS considéra
plusieurs possibilités, tout en tenant compte des pays représentés soit au sein du
Bureau Exécutif soit dans les divers comités. L'expansion de la Communauté Européene
représentait un facteur important dans la décision à prendre. Bien que
géographiquement parlant, il n'y ait pas de changements notables dans la superficie de
l'Europe (mesurée en mètres carrés), il y a des changements importants dans le contexte
politique et social de l'Europe et aujourd'hui, avec le courrier électronique et
Internet, la communauté des bibliothécaires médicaux de l'Europe semble ne plus avoir
ni limites geographiques, ni frontières. Poursuivant le désir de s'étendre vers nos
collègues de l'Europe centrale et de l'Europe de l'Est, il était évident que nous
allions inviter Ioana Robu, une récipiente de la bourse Cunningham de MLA, à devenir
l'éditeur en chef. Ioana suggéra que Sally Wood-Lamont, son assistante, prenne
l'entière responsabilité et promit son soutien total dans la tâche éditoriale. Une

Sally, d'origine écossaise, a reçu sa formation de bibliothécaire à
Edinburgh et a assumé le poste de bibliothécaire assistante à la bibliothèque de
l'Université d'Edinburgh avant de se fixer à Cluj-Napoca, Roumanie, en 1993.
Un congé sabbatique fut transformé en séjour permanent en Roumanie;
Sally est actuellement la consultante de la bibliothèque de médecine universitaire,
responsable de l'automatisation et de la réorganisation de la bibliothèque selon un
modèle occidental, qui sera ensuite celui de toutes les bibliothèques de Roumanie du
futur. Tous les aspects de la bibliothéconomie sont representés dans ce travail, qui
exige la formation, le développement de systèmes autonomes financièrement, le
développement des collections, les règles de fonctionnement, etc.
Sally intervient également comme consultante volontaire pour d'autres
bibliothèques de Cluj et d'autres villes, et a facilité les échanges avec la
Bibliothèque du Congrès et des bibliothèques anglaises et européennes. De plus, elle
coordonne des cours de bibliothéconomie pour des bibliothécaires (une première en
Roumanie) financés par le "British Council". Ioana Robu et Sally Wood sont les
deux instrutrices et les cours sont intitulés Technologie et Information dans la
Bibliothèque Moderne.
En 1995, Sally a reçu le prix de la Bibliothécaire Internationale de
l'Année, delivré par l'Association de la Bibliothèque d'Angleterre, un honneur qui a
été accordé seulement trois fois dans le passé. Sally a une expérience étendue non
seulement en bibliothéconomie et dans l'enseignement, mais aussi comme éditrice et
éditrice de langue de journaux médicaux et de bibliothéconomie.
Sally a conservé des liens étroits avec l'Ecosse ce qui facilite des
échanges bilatéraux entre l'Ecosse et la Roumanie et offre un soutien éducational et
social en Roumanie. Sally joue un role important dans ces activités.
C'est avec beaucoup de plaisir que le Bureau Exécutif de l'AEIBS
présente Sally qui a accepté la responsabilité d'éditrice en chef de notre bulletin
d'informations. Les membres du comité éditorial se réjouissent de travailler avec Sally
et sont heureux qu'elle se soit jointe à cette équipe.
