ONLINE JOURNALS: IMPACT ON INTERLIBRARY LOAN USAGE

The communication ought to determinate the impact of online journals on the use of Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

Setting:

The Library of Medicine of the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (UAM) with 1.700 titles of online full-text journals and a staff of 1400 researchers, has conduced a ILL study over last 3 years . The information collected is compared to another ILL services, in Spain and abroad.
The stabilization in the use of ILL suggests that many use patterns have changed significantly since the introduction of online journals: many users may be compromising quality of information for convenience when selecting journals articles.


Methodology:

ILL requests statistics are surveyed and questionnaires are prepared to end-users to determinate trends and indicators of usage.
Recent literature is reviewed about : users, electronic information and bibliometric studies in medical libraries.

Objetives:

--The libraries need documented dates to know new patterns and attitudes of users of loan activity.
--Analyse factors including into user’s decision-making to obtain journals articles: time, access, convenience, quality.
--Impact of online journals and predictions in the future of ILL services: technical changes, delivery of electronic documents, cooperation in new projects of ILL.
-- Possible implications for collection development are discussed.
