US Health Sciences Libraries: Physical Places or Virtual Spaces in the 21st Century?

Lyon B. J. (U.S. National Library of Medicine)

What are the latest trends in building, renovating and revitalizing biomedical library facilities in the US? How are library spaces being redesigned to respond to curriculum changes, new technologies, and user’s expectations? What are the evolving roles of libraries and librarians and how are they being reflected in library spaces? How is increasingly comprehensive electronic access to biomedical knowledge affecting space planning for collections and services? How is remote storage being used?

A number of biomedical libraries have recently completed or are planning new facilities, physical expansions, or renovations. The National Library of Medicine is planning an additional building, as well. This presentation will use recent library building projects to illustrate how a variety of US academic, health science and hospital libraries are responding to these challenges.
