Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali, II.ZZ.SS., (Zooprophylactic Experimental Institutes), are widespread all over the Italian country with 10 central sites and 90 provincial diagnostic sites. The researchers, dealing with scientific reasearch and diagnostics in the veterinary field and similar sciences, amount totally to a large number. For the last three years, the Institutes have published several articles exclusively via the conventional publishing media. This figure does not account for the pre-prints and the intellectual papers commonly known as “grey literature”: technical reports, proceedings, project documents, pre- and post-publication documents, lectures, therefore, a precious scientific resource which does not enjoy of a safe dissemination medium is actually lacking.
Even the publication in scientific journal can represent a barrier to the access into the scientific works, which, on the contrary, ought to be made available to the scientific community as soon as possible. Indeed, they can be hardly accessed becouse of the rise in the subscription costs and the increasingly stringent copyright conditions which limit their free reproduction.
Thanks to the new ICTs, Information and Communication technologies, and the availability of the proper software designed for the e-prints management, an Open Archive implementation is currently under study, so as to throw down these barriers granting free access to the documents produced by Italian IIZZSS and making them available not exclusively to the scientific community but to the whole society. Not only is this archive meant to act as a reference tool for IZS, but also as a pivot for new research and it is aimed at enhancing a wide collective technological growth. It is an open system to preserve and search the scientific works carried out by IIZZSS researchers which could provide for the self-archiving and the fast dissemination of their work.
The objective aimed at are as follows:
- the historical retrieval of all the scientific publications issue by 10 institutes
- the implementation of a self-archiving system and the enjoyment of the IIZZSS research results, which is to be open and compatible with the emerging interoperability standards in scientific documentation
- the trial of a new communication pattern based on self-archiving accomplished by the researchers
- fostering self-archiving in IIZZSS scientific community
- the conversion into metadata of the works held in the data server IZS@Eprints.it
available to be collected by the service provider OAI compatible
- permament stock of the scientific papers issued by the IIZZSS researchers.
