The e-U (Electronic University) project also referred as virtual campus project , is a Portuguese Government initiative developed by the UMIC Department (Unidade de Missão, Inovação e Conhecimento), that reports to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and to the Minister Assistant of Prime Minister using budget from the structural funds (2000-2006) approved by the European Commission. The main objective of this project is to build a commun network of online services and academic contents (by sharing knowledge, electronic resources and producing new academic contents) in the portuguese university communities. Students and teatchers will have access on their PC’s and Laptops (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) to classe and student papers, document requests, electronic articles, grades online, bookshops and academic administrative services online, as well as access to the internet through a broadband wireless LAN within the university campus or from any other point through the Internet. Many institutions are now working together with UMIC for the success of the e-U project : Hardware and Software Entreprises (like Microsoft, Cisco, Intel and Sun ), Telecommunication Operators, Financial Institutions. Libraries in the University have a relevant importance on this project because they will have the opportunity to offer to their users in a commun internet portal more products and services with low costs (all the information is commun to all faculties within the campus) and better knowledge, new access to importante contents like databases, articles online, e-books, shared bibliographic catalogs, and new online services such as document delivery, online reference services, PDA’s information downloads ,etc.
This poster focus on the participation of the Lisbon University in the e-U project where Faculty of Medicine is integrated, and has now a great opportunity in joining this project to develop and grow in diversity and quality of user services, offering more digital health information contents, providing new virtual services and transforming the library in an open library 24 hours a day.
We will appoint the differences between the services and health information products existing today in our library, and how it will be in the future under the e-U project. What it will be the benefits and advantages for our users, staff and all the academic community towards to an open information society that we hope it come soon with this project.
