INTRODUCTION: The law 12/2001 of 21st December on Health Regulations for the Community of Madrid (LOSCAM) establishes according to the provisions of its Title X, the creation of the Training, Research and Health Studies Agency. In addition, the Bibliographical Information and Health Sciences Documentary Center, depending on this Agency is also created. A Health Sciences Libraries Coordination Committee is set up to carry out the activities of this Center aiming at promoting cooperation among libraries, optimizing library services at the disposal of its members and the scientific community. The first project of the Committee is the “Lain Entralgo” Virtual Library.
GENERAL PURPOSE: To study the impact caused by shared collection of electronic regular publications in both libraries of the mentioned Committee hospitals.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: To compare the list of more consulted titles in electronic format with titles in paper format before starting electronic shared collection.
To assess the incorporation of new electronic titles, previously unavailable in paper format.
To analyze the use of the Documents Collection Service (DCS) in terms of incorporation of titles in electronic format.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
1.- Statistical analysis of access data, consulting, and use of all the electronic resources available during the first year of development of the virtual library. 2.- Comparative analysis of consulting and use data of the electronic collection using the collection in paper a year in advance: analysis per library, title and specialty. 3.- Comparative analysis of use of shared electronic collection with the use of data obtained from DCS.
CONCLUSIONS: Use of journals with a higher impact index in the different specialties Linkage among more used electronic titles and those which were previously consulted in paper. The new titles of the shared collection (included in the package) are more frequently consulted. Decrease of requests from DCS Suggestions for new purchases Reduction of collection in paper
