Old and New Challenges on Information Management

Rodriguez F (Past Director of Bireme)

The library profession always had to deal with new or difficult tasks that tested their ability and skills. Today librarians face a new and huge challenge represented by the ability to discriminate between worthy and unworthy information in the World Wide Web. The amazing number of Web pages available on any particular topic as well as the several surveys and studies
showing a picture of dubious information quality make more difficult the traditional role of the librarian as a selector and evaluator of information.
Together with this big challenge that has to be faced intelligently, new tools as the digital library and new concepts, as the Evidence-based Medicine can provide librarians with powerful instruments to meet old challenges still present in the profession.
