Introduction
The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise "G.Caporale" is one of the ten Istituti Zooprofilattici Sperimentali in Italy providing technical support to the Central and Regional governments in the fields of animal health and veterinary public health.
Its main tasks are:
-
research on aetiology and pathogenesis
of infectious and communicable diseases of animals;
-
diagnosis of animal diseases
and zoonoses;
-
microbiological and chemical laboratory
tests on food of animal origin for human consumption and on animal
feedstuff;
-
epidemiological surveillance on animal
health, animal production and food of animal origin;
-
support and assistance to breeders
for the control and eradication of infectious diseases and the development
and improvement of animal productions;
-
training of professional The
name and technical operators in animal health, public health and animal
production;
-
technical and scientific co-operation
with national and international veterinary research institutions:
Other services are the production
of diagnostic tools, sera and vaccines, services of health education
and pet therapy, scientific and legislative documentation and information.
The mission of IZSAM is to provide
cutting edge scientific and technological services in Animal health, Veterinary
Public Health and Environmental protection. Customers of IZSAM are national
and international public and private sectors. Their satisfaction, through
the provision of quality services and low-cost management of resources
and facilities, is our main concern.
Since 1999 (D.M. 4 October ) the
IZS is also National Reference Centre for the Brucellosis and is duties
are:
-
to operate as a centre of expertise
and standardization of diagnostic techniques in its sphere of competence
-
to distribute reference biological products
and reagents for the diagnosis and control of List A and B animal diseases
-
to develop new procedures for the diagnosis
and control of List A and B animal diseases
-
to gather, analyze and disseminate epidemiological
data in its sphere of competence
-
to place expert consultants at the disposal
of the OIE
-
to provide technical and scientific
training to personnel from OIE Member Countries
-
to organize seminars and meetings on
behalf of the OIE
-
to coordinate scientific and technical
studies in collaboration with other laboratories or organizations
-
to publish and disseminate any useful
epidemiological information among OIE Member Countries.
Libray / Documentation Centre
The running activities of the Library
are as under:
-
Indexing for retrieval and bibliographical
description of the documents , i.e. books, scanning of periodicals, audiovisual
materials,
-
Recording of the veterinary legislation
, available on IZS Internet site known as "Nature Laws"
-
Collection and indexing of UNI, UNI-EN,
ISO, AFNOR regulations;
-
Service of reference on demand for the
staff ;
-
Gateway to bibliographical database
i.e. CABI, ANABS,ASPHA,PUBMED and full-text periodicals , such as Sciencedirect;
-
Monitoring of Internet Resources in
the field of Biomedicine;
-
Member of the SBN library pool, Teramo.
At the Documentation Centre Sanitary
Registers are recorded and indexed on CD-Rom.
The activities of both Library and
Documentation Centre are ruled by Procedures established within the Quality
System of the Institute.
Targets
A virtual Library on Brucell@, that
is a specialized infrastructure capable of providing a kind of integrated
service for research, reference and access scientific documents has been
created within the specific area Library / Documentation Centre.
Such an activity has been already
experienced by the COVEPI Laboratory and is presently avalaible in the
IZS Internet site (http:///www.izs.it)
as to BSE, SVD and emergencies as Bluetongue, Dioxin, Avian Influenza,
Telematic System for the management of emergencies.
The project stems from the need of
overcoming the difficulty of researches in their retrieving information
on Brucella . Its goal is to give researchers the opportunity of getting
information in a very shorter time.
The project aims at integrating two
information level of the Library:
-
The real assets consisting of
the results of the current research projects; research projects granted
by the Ministry of Health and experimentation carried out by the IZS .
-
The virtual assets consisting
of scientific papers obtainable from Internet sources; the information
flows are collected, analyzed and synthesized into organized scientific
information.
The system would gather traditional
printed publication, Internet resources and technology of hypertestual
language whose main targets are:
-
A simple easy-to-use intuitive search
and retrieval system:
-
Providing a friendly access critical
mass of material;
-
Offering continued technical enhancements
and service support, not only of scientific publication but also related
resources;
-
Promoting the site on the Web as a source
for hard-to-find, must-have research.
Architecture of the System
The project has been structured on
the ground of :
-
A bibliographic database of printed,
digital and multimedial publications exiting within Library and Documentation
Centre run with an Information Retrieval Software;
-
A databank of specific telematic sites
reporting the trend of both research and experimentation in the Institute.
Resources
The starting- points are :
-
EC and Italian Regulations;
-
Scientific literature databases;
-
Electronic Journals;
-
Books;
-
E-books;
-
Archives of pre-prints and grey literature;
-
Proceedings serials;
-
Technical report;
-
Constant updating of databases of telematic
sites in the field of the research with sites dynamic rating systems.
Each item is provided with a catalographic
description , according to the International Standards.
The database of the Telematic Sites
is monitored and updated at regular intervals.
The processing of documents, for
the purpose of providing formalized indexing data is a pre-requisite of
the compilation of a database which is subsequently operated on for the
purpose of retrieval. Resources are chosen according to their recognized
scientific value.
The different resources are technically
integrated by adopting the Dublin Core set of basic elements in order to
let different resources inter-operate.
Services
-
Bibliographic research;
-
Visualisation of full-text documents;
-
Document delivery;
-
Reference on demand .
The system relies on a unique interface
gateway to all resources. A query and research software uses all the above
database as a source for a disseminated research service. The interface
is provided with a "friendly" browser such as Netscape. The final user
has at his disposal a unique point of access the wanted information ; the
quest can be performed by author's name, titre and other single or combined
key-words.
All scientific papers, pre-prints
or short communications for meetings, congress, symposia will be available
full-text. |
