Cooperation and consortia: New way of accessing to the databases by consortia in Hungary. Progress of two projects in the medical and health faculties.

In addition to MEDLINE, the EMBASE and CINAHIL databases are among the most important bibliographic sources in medicine. These are expensive electronic sources. The new way of the CD-ROM subscription is to organise one or more consortia with different members.

Definition of Consortia: temporary alliance for common financial activity.

Definition of Consortia for resources of information: Alliance of user groups of special subjects for common acquisition and usage.

The general processes of establishing consortia are as follows:

- general aims: 

  • to increase the information access and supply,
  • to decrease the hardware expenses
  • the shared common usage of services
- the results: maximum utilisation of the devices and knowledge 

Target of their establishing:

  • to take part in different national /international projects efficiently
  • to decrease the budget.
Types of Consortia:
  • National
  • International
  • Regional/local
  • Professional field
The main steps in creating consortia:
  • to decide the would-be aims
  • to inform the relevant groups
  • joining statement for consortia, which informs about the number of would be users and the present technical conditions
  • to fix the concrete work by the management of different groups of experts (members, leading committee, election of project manager)
Their tasks are:
  • comparative analysis of information services, shipping facilities, fitting to the other resources, decision about the e-doc: CD-ROM /online.
  • paying conditions
  • test period before usage, trainings for librarians
  • learning the research techniques for users
Final decision:
  • choosing the best vendor, contract, using and its analysis and agreement between the members of consortia in sharing of expenses.
